Bespoke London Soft Suede and Cedarwood, a 100 ml Eau de Parfum, on our shelf in Kampala rather than ordered in.

This one opens bright and closes warm. Bergamot and cardamom give it a lift at the start, with coconut softening the edge; the middle turns sweeter through orange blossom, cinnamon and tonka bean; and it settles into sandalwood, suede, oud and cedarwood. Suede as a note is exactly what it sounds like, a soft dry leather, and it is what keeps the base from being just another sweet wood.

The practical read: this is an evening and cooler-weather scent. Oud and cedarwood are heavy, and in direct afternoon heat a base like this can feel like a lot. Worn out in the evening it reads as rich and expensive rather than overwhelming.

It is an Eau de Parfum, carrying roughly 8 to 14 per cent fragrance oil against an Eau de Toilette's 5 to 9. With a base this heavy, apply it with a notably lighter hand than you would a fresh scent - two sprays, not four.
