The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 Active in black. The cheapest way into a Xiaomi band, and for most people it covers what they actually use.

Steps, heart rate, sleep and 50 sports modes, on a 1.47-inch colour screen behind reinforced glass, with more than 100 watch faces to pick from. It weighs about 10 grams, so you will forget it is there, and the TPU strap fits wrists from 135 to 215 mm, which covers most adults comfortably.

Battery runs up to 18 days in typical use from a 300mAh cell, and the magnetic charger fills it in under two hours. At 5ATM it is rated for swimming pools, not just rain and handwashing.

Be clear about what it is not. The screen is a TFT panel rather than AMOLED, so blacks are grey and it is less punchy in direct sun than the Smart Band 10. There is no blood oxygen sensor and no built-in GPS. If either of those matters, look at the Band 10 or the Band 10 Pro below.

Which one should you buy?

We carry four Xiaomi wearables. In short:

• Smart Band 9 Active - UGX 200,000. The entry point. A 1.47" TFT screen, heart rate but no blood oxygen, 50 sports modes. Does the basics well and costs the least.
• Smart Band 10 - UGX 280,000. Steps up to a bright 1.72" AMOLED at 1500 nits, adds blood oxygen and stress tracking, and 150+ sports modes.
• Redmi Watch 5 Active - UGX 300,000. The biggest screen at 2 inches and the biggest battery, but an LCD panel at 500 nits, so it is dimmer outdoors than the AMOLED bands.
• Smart Band 10 Pro - UGX 550,000. The only one with built-in GPS, so it tracks runs without your phone. Brightest screen at 2000 nits. The one for runners.

None of the four except the Pro has its own GPS.
